Manicures are a method of preserving the delicate skin of the hands. On the other hand pedicures refer to the same practices done for your feet. These procedures are painless. They can be rather relaxing, and performed at a number of salons and spas around the world.

When you are getting a manicure, the spa attendant or beauty technician's goal is to make sure that the dead skin cells are removed from your hands and feet so that your hands and feet receive lot of are moisture, and that the skin is properly exfoliated. This means that your cuticles (the skin surrounding your nail bed) should be cleaned and trimmed, and any rough patches on your hands and feet should be softened during the manicure or pedicure.

Many spas and salons also use natural remedies or essential oils during a manicure or pedicure. Your hands may be soaked in gentler, relaxing essential oils like lavender, or an invigorating scent like citrus to help in enhancing the look of your skin.

Manicure and Pedicure Sets

If you don't live near a spa or salon, or if you want to maintain your pedicures and manicures at home, you can purchase manicure and pedicure sets that will be of help to you. In the set, you should find items like a nail file, which is used to make your nail smoothen and to eliminate, hang nails and jagged nails. An Emory board is similar to a nail file and can help in removing strong or tough nails. There is also a nail clipper, to cut nails if they are too long so that they can be shaped better. A cuticle shaper or cleaner is a tool that helps you to clean the excess skin away from your cuticle.

Before you begin your manicure, you may want to soak your hands in fairly warm water with your favorite oil or special cosmetic soap that is designed for your hands. In pedicure sets, you may also find a pumice stone; this is used to remove the scaly or dry skin from the bottom of the foot in order to give your feet a new and polished appearance. Once you have filed and shaped your nails, you may want to use a pedicure machine to make sure that your feet look healthy. The machine will soak your feet in warm water with what you choose (i.e. special soaps or oils). This will make your feet soft and smooth, and will loosen the cuticles so that you can trim them more effectively. Pedicure machines are also a wonderful mode of relaxation, so even if you're not giving yourself a pedicure, you can still use pedicure machines to keep your feet soft.
